Rehabilitation of 3.5 km Road Project

Baidoa or Baydhabo is the capital of Bay region and the interim capital of South West State of Somalia, a strategic town in South-Central Somalia situated approximately 250 km west of Mogadishu and 240 km southeast of the Ethiopian border.
The city is one of the most important economic centers in southern Somalia, conducting significant trade in local and imported products, livestock and non-food items.
The city was also home to the transitional Federal Government of Somalia.
On August 15, 2016 a team of Engineers from Ecotech consultants and PIU Engineer met with the Mayor of Baidoa Mr. Abdullahi Ali Watin in Baidoa to discuss the rehabilitation and the reconstruction of 5.5 km Baidoa Main Road project. Ecotech Consultant Engineers together with SFF-LD PIU engineer carried out a reconnaissance survey of the entire segment of the existing road to be rehabilitated, starting from Arch 1 Monument and ending at Manyo Fulka. The purpose of the reconnaissance survey was to assess the physical condition of the road, determine quantities and for collecting data in the designing of the engineering works
From the inspection carried out by the engineers from both PIU and the consultancy firm, it emerged that the asphalt road showed significant deterioration due to fatigue, aging and lack of repairs over the years. Alligator cracks, distortions, potholes, traverse and longitudinal crack sand complete disintegration in some places were also seen.
After concluding the survey, the engineers and the local administration agreed on the initial plan of rehabilitating the 3.5 km road. Moreover, In order to optimize employment opportunity for the community
On 10th July 2017, Rehabilitation of 3.5 km road in Baidoa was officially launched. The Minister of Finance, H.E. Abdirahman Ducaale Beyle led the team that travelled for the event that included the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance Somalia and SFF-LD Project Implementation Unit.
On November 11, 2017, Arlaadi Construction Company managed to deliver part of the bitumen to the construction site and as a result work has resumed. It is expected that the project will be completed by the end of December 2017, as originally planned.
The project has strong progress during the third reporting period of 2017 and Baidoa Road Rehabilitation is approximately 90% completed. However, rehabilitation works was halted, as supply of the bitumen could not be delivered due to lack of security and road blockades. Nevertheless, the contractor found a solution and managed to deliver of the first two trucks of Bitumen the site of the project.
